Time and Work

Today Work and Time topic is going to be discussed in a very preliminary and a simple manner! And experts, kindly note this: This is for beginners!

The Time and Work questions in Aptitude Rounds of many companies will be usually twisted or aesthetically framed to be in a difficult manner! But they are mostly very very simpler than we think.

These questions can easily be answered if you understand the question and use the following procedure:

The question is:

Arun can cut a Neem tree in 6 days. Bala* can cut the same tree in 12 days. If both Arun and Bala started to cut the tree together, how many days will they take to cut it down?

The first thing that we are going to do is:

Shorten their Names: Take A for Arun. And take B for Bala. Do this for all Aptitude questions as it helps you to MAKE IT SIMPLE!

And then follow this strategy:

If A can cut a tree in 6 days, how many trees will he cut in a single day?

Yes! It is  1/6  of the tree!  

Similarly, if B can cut a tree in 12 days, he can cut 1/12 of a tree in a single day!

And if they cut together, they will cut  1/6  and  1/12  of the same tree together:

Means:

[ 1/6  +  1/12  ] of the tree will be cut by A and B together in a single day!

i.e., [1/6  +  1/12] = [ 2/12  +  1/12]      à  Basic Steps of Adding fractions

                    =  1/4 of the tree will be cut together in a single day by them together!

But the Question is: How many days will it take to cut a single tree by A & B together?

Now just think, you will get the answer! If they can cut quarter of the tree in a day, they will cut the whole tree in 4 days!

i.e.: Consider N to be the no. of days to cut the whole tree.

                      N  x  1/4 tree = 1 tree

                                         N=1 x 4

                                            = 4 days
